Gum disease prevention and treatment.

Periodontal disease — inflammation of the tissue around the teeth caused by bacterial growth — is common; an estimated 64.7 million Americans have it, often with no symptoms until it's too late. Diagnosed in its earliest form (gingivitis), it can be reversed and tooth loss prevented. There are four stages of gum disease.

Periodontal Disease Stages

1

Gingivitis

The earliest form of periodontal disease, and it is reversible. This stage typically has mild symptoms that go unnoticed.

2

Early Periodontitis

This stage has minor bone loss and is the beginning of permanent damage.

3

Moderate Periodontitis

More bone loss is noted, and the patient may start to have symptoms such as tender, receding, or bleeding gums.

4

Severe Periodontitis

At this stage some teeth will be loose and not savable.

Benefits of Periodontal Treatment

Prevent Bone Loss

Periodontal disease can cause tooth infection due to bone loss, which cannot be reversed — treating this disease early is key.

Prevent Tooth Loss

Periodontal tooth infections have a very poor prognosis and often result in extractions.

Improved Health

The bacteria that causes periodontal disease is linked to many systemic health problems such as heart disease, dementia, diabetes, pneumonia and cancer.

Prevent Bad Breath

Bacteria is typically the cause of bad breath, and periodontal disease can cause very bad breath the individual isn't even aware of.
